Our most traditional model, the Espardenya, which was the genuine classic flat Spanish espadrille until the arrival of vulcanization in the late 1950s; that is when a process was invented that allowed natural rubber to become more durable and elastic. In 1952 a fine layer of natural rubber would be melted onto the bottom of the sole to increase durability.
We have kept the traditional classic espardenya alive for purists, no rubber, just the rope. The lightweight sole is hand rolled and not compressed, allowing thus the feet to breathe even more in this comfortable and appealing original.
Here's Vicente, one of the last "Alpargateros" of the village that still know how to hand stitch the sole of the original espadrille.
