Here are the espadrilles from the medieval times , small masterpiece of craftsmanship where the complex braided upper are entirely hand made.
The last artisan of the village that knows how to do this ancient footwear has just retired... there's a good chance that we will not be able to obtain these espadrilles in the future.
The sole is hand-stitched by Vicente, nicknamed ''El Borracho ", one of the last alpargateros (espadrille artisans) in a village of northern Spain.
The soles made of braided jute rope are shaped then hand-sewn with a punch on a wooden bench specially designed for this task.
